Strong turnout needed at the November 30 Sky Channel meetings

All members are called upon to support the National Day of Union and Community Action to protect and defend the rights at work of all teachers and workers in Australia.

All Federation members are authorised to stop work for up to three hours on November 30 to attend national Sky Channel meetings connecting communities and members of all unions across Australia.

A list of Sky Channel venues was faxed to all Federation Representatives on November 5. The venues are also listed at www.rightsatwork.com.au/campaigns.

The Sky Channel meetings commence at 8.30am. Members are asked to arrive prior to that time. The national broadcast will come from the rally at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Members who also wish to attend rallies and marches that follow the Sky Channel broadcast are authorised to stop work for a longer period, if required, to attend such rallies. Proposed regional marches and rallies for after the broadcast include Albury, Bathurst, Coffs Harbour, Goulburn and Port Macquarie.

The National Day of Action is about the rights at work of all workers, including teachers.

The Howard Government is openly threatening future federal funding to public schools with the requirement that teachers will be offered individual contracts, including so-called "performance pay".

In the student reports dispute, the Federal Government has used funding blackmail on the states to try to force the use A-E or its equivalent reporting. This is against the ethical and professional values of the teaching profession.

Mr Howard has already used funding blackmail to force individual contracts to be offered to TAFE teachers in NSW.

We cannot allow the Howard Government another term of office. If it gets elected again, there is no doubt that it will move to fully implement its extremist industrial relations laws, and to inflict more funding blackmail against the interests of public education, students and teachers.

Every Federation workplace is to ensure maximum representation at the Sky Channel meetings. As a gesture of solidarity to other unionists, parents and community members -- all of whom are being hurt by the Federal Government's legislation -- Federation authorises minimal supervision.

Tumbalong Park the focus for Sydney

All Federation members in the Sydney metropolitan area are strongly encouraged to attend the rally and march from Tumbalong Park. Federation members who are able to attend are to assemble prior to 8.30am in Tumbalong Park which is in Darling Harbour. Members are advised to take the train to Town Hall station and then walk down Bathurst Street to Darling Harbour.
